Former Sheffield Wednesday and Watford star closes in on second career promotion, 10 years after Championship triumph

One former Sheffield Wednesday and Watford man still plies his trade in the depths of English non-league football.

Sheffield Wednesday and Watford are a pair of sides that have certainly endured difficulties at times, both on-and-off the pitch recently.

It certainly is a stark contrast to the mid 2010s, in which both sides were thriving as Watford notched time in the Premier League, whilst Sheffield Wednesday were knocking on the door of promotion, but were unable to make it after failing two successive play-off campaigns in the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons.

In those two campaigns, Sheffield Wednesday had a brilliant Championship side, which makes it staggering, in hindsight, that they were unable to return to the top flight after a long hiatus.

One man on that side was a stalwart under Carlos Carvahal, and also found himself playing for his international side in Europe, but is now enduring a completely different career path as he looks to gain promotion from the 9th tier of English football.

Former Sheffield Wednesday and Watford star Daniel Pudil nears non-league promotion with Hallam FC

Sheffield Wednesday’s no-thrills and ever-dependable full-back of the mid 2010s was Daniel Pudil, who they signed from the Hornets.

It is clear that he felt at home during his time in S6 with the Owls as, nearly six years after he left Sheffield Wednesday, he still finds himself in the local area playing for Hallam FC, the club who play at the officially recognised world’s oldest football ground.

The former Czech Republic international played against the likes of Germany, Belgium, and Spain during his career, and also achieved promotion to the Premier League 10 years ago with Watford, but now faces an entirely different task as he hopes to get Hallam FC into the eighth tier of English football.

On Saturday afternoon, Hallam FC will host Beverley Town at the famous Sandygate Road for the chance of promotion to the 8th tier.

Daniel Pudil set for Sheffield Wednesday reunion at the end of 2024/25

On top of a play-off final, former Sheffield Wednesday man Pudil also has a Sheffield & Hallamshire County Cup final, where they will played Worksop Town at Hillsborough Stadium.

It will certainly be a warm reception for the Czech, who conjured up a positive status during his time in S6, and is one of the reasons for his stay in the Steel City.

These days in the game, more players appear to retire as soon as their career takes a dip in their mid 30s, but at the age-of-39, Pudil is showing no signs of slowing down.
